apparently, a lot of other women are confused about it too:
mad props to Mad TV for predicting the iPad.
dr. martin luther king jr. sings
amazing message, isn't it?
oh if only all our songs had messages like this.
"i have a dream"
"let freedom ring"
"free at last"
a good actor
robert downey jr., man.he's great, not to mention gorgeous.
i watched ben stiller's tropic thunder yesterday with amanda and liz. it was such a funny and gross movie.
in the movie, robert downey jr. plays a white man playing a black man or as kirk lazarus, downey's character, put it, he's "a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude" which doesn't make sense unless downey was referring to himself playing lazarus playing sergeant lincoln osirus.
i think my favorite scene with him though, is when he takes out the contacts he had to wear for the movie and shows the audience his brilliant blue eyes. (in the film he has blue eyes.)
← aren't cosmetics amazing?
speaking of favorite scenes, jack black also stole the show a few times.
sure, his scenes are more for crude humor, but they've still found a soft spot in my heart.
i especially like the scene where he has just been shot by a missile and he's rolling on the floor in a burmese (?) dress screaming "my ass! my ass!"
my goodness, that movie had such a star-studded cast.
tobey macguire from the spiderman movies, top model tyra banks, tom cruise from... lots of movies, jennifer love hewitt from the ghost whisperer, and of course, the cutie matthew mcconaughey. (:
i also watched the first half of sherlock holmes two days ago.
robert downey jr. was also in that one.
my goodness, he has an amazing accent.
jude law wasn't half bad himself.
gosh, i love men. *______*
EDIT: shoot, in my obsession with men i had neglected to mention why i thought robert is such a good actor: if i hadn't know who he was, i would never have guessed that sergeant osirus was actually played by a white man! robert really nailed the character of osirus. from his gruffy voice, to his attitude, to his behavior, to his accent... what more can i say? he's not just a good actor but a great actor!
please watch the movie when you guys have time just for robert, haha.
EDIT again: just finished sherlock holmes. robert. downey. jr.! ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

nutella + helvetica

a tie-in to my previous entry: for my friday advertising class with sandi silbert, we watched the helvetica movie and ate saltine crackers topped with nutella.
so nutella isn't exactly a tie-in to the previous blog, it still is yummy goodness, man.
i've watched the helvetica movie thrice already before sandi showed it in her class.
the first time around, i hardly remembered any facts about the celebrated typeface. i didn't remember at all it was created in switzerland, nor did the movie make me notice helvetica at all.
the second time i watched the movie (if you'll call it "watching"), i remembered the "crazy Coke guy."
no, kiddies, i don't mean "Coke" as in "cocaine," i mean "Coke" as in "Coca-Cola." srsly though, he's still just as crazy each time i watch the movie.
well, the third time i basically just listened to it. actually, i had it on as background noise. in reality, i didn't pay the documentary any attention. (oh, a small digression: did anyone notice that i finally learned now to use the right and left image adjustments? harhar, i r proud.)
yes, in case you're wondering, that is my thirty-six marker Copic wallet. yes, i do take it somewhat as a status symbol. tharr also be the helvetica dvd case. there are some awesome graphics inside the dvd jacket. i totally turned it inside out, haha. sorry sandi.
wait a second, now i'm totally off-topic. i will get back to the dvd jacket right after this. okay, "fourth" time actually watching the film - i totally noticed helvetica everywhere! it's mind blowing just how many of america's celebrated retailers like american apparel, for example, use the font.
of course, there were also some sneaky helvetica users, sears, for example. it totally fooled me with those blue letters and the white lines. the sears logo looks like a completely different type! but noooooo, suckers, it's helvetica. okay, so now i have yet another crafty little tie-inback to my previous digression: you wanna see more photos of helvetica in action? look at the dvd jacket! oooh man, my logic is infallible. pohlmann really worked his magic on me.
i'm not sure if i can squeeze three photos in a row but i'll try...
...urgh, actually, you know what? i'm too lazy to format the photos.
let me just link you instead: helvetica dvd jacket details
t-shirt edition (plus denzel washington‽)
okay, i reaaaally love novelty t-shirts.
they make me giggle-especially this gem i came across today via core77 magazine:

$24, Jeremy Boston's "Boobs" fitted T-Shirt
for the nerds who just can't get enough of boobs and math.
design + wit = genius
then of course, there is this one shirt i found many years ago in a book of 珍道具 that i still remember.
it's so whacky yet so practical. i love it.
i would buy this shirt:

Kenji Kawakami's "Back Scratcher's T-Shirt"
as long as we're talking about the past, i might as well include this tasty little morsel:

Poolie Studios's "Fuck Helvetica" T-Shirt
it's a joke, folks. i love helvetica and i love myriad pro.
well okay, i love helvetica a little bit more...
nevertheless, i'd still wear the shirt.
too bad it's no longer available );
kinda "in- your-face," isn't it? talk about "shock factor," sheesh (:
just in case you can't read what the shirt says: "FUCK HELVETICA/sincerely, myriad pro."
oh how i love these inside design jokes.
speaking of inside jokes, i have just the t-shirt for that:

$36, Brooklyn Industries's "Golden Ratio" T-Shirt
of course, you'd have to know something about art and math to understand that.
who knew t-shirts could be so witty?
oh, oh, and just in case you forgot, the golden ratio is 1.61803399.
last but not least, my random addendum: the denzel washington venn diagram!

for the big picture: http://tinypic.com/r/zjbfyt/6
...i have no idea why the image is so freaking big.
oh well, may you bask in the glory of his hat, facial hair and glassesness...
i hope this post induced at least some chuckles.
yes, even involuntary ones.
EDIT: i went back and reuploaded the venn diagram. now it's too small. i'll just link you. >>

the rainbow after the storm

Image courtesy of Albert K. Ryan © 2010
the calm after the storm.
i've been soothed.
rainy days are particularly slow days, aren't they?
i didn't feel like doing anything at all today.
i didn't even feel like ranting and whining.
(Oh, random digression: today's little field trip to King Taco in East LA was really fun! I genuinely love Ms. Hernandez to death. She's such a great teacher.)
here's mine:
Rainbow, January 21st, 2010
Q: Why does this photo suck so much?
A: I took it while I was driving.
Don't ever, ever, take after me, kids. It's dangerous!

Sun + Shine, 2008
good days are a-comin'. I can feel it in me bones.
why the sudden complete turnaround?
assertive people have got it going on!
i should be more assertive more often.
after all, it brought me a message from him.
oooh, while we're at it, here's another (not so) random digression:
i had bad milk again today.
actually, i don't think the milk was bad.
perhaps my stomach just decided to have an adverse reaction to it.
(digression within a digression-- grammar stuff again! "adverse" means "unfavorable" whereas "averse" means "unwilling to.")
back to milk.
perhaps my mixture of watermelon pieces and milk didn't mix so well in my tummy?
oh, there was also a half slice of a strawberry too.
even though it gave me stomach pain, the concoction was worth it.
it was yummy to the very last drop.
The Concoction: Before

The Concoction: After
look! it's a heart! cute, isn't it?
i saved it for last.
the watermelon chunks were long gone by then.
too bad strawberries aren't in season every season...
they're insanely delicious.
piddle puddle puddle trickle.
the storm is slowly breaking up in my head.
soon i will see clearly again.

retrospective art dump
Since I haven't had the chance to photograph my recent work, I've decided to drag up some old projects and dump them here.

A Labor of Love May, 2009
32" x 40" marker & acrylic on foam core
I finished this piece already but I haven't taken a photo of the finished product yet. This particular piece really drove me up the wall! I don't think you can see it but the entire image is made by a process called pointillism or otherwise known as stipple. It's made entirely by dots!! Haha, upon retrospection, this piece is like idolization to the MAX. Yus, i r miyavicrazy.

Untitled, 2009
18" x 24" oil on canvas
My first wipeout painting. The first step of a wipeout painting is to coat one's brush with either turpentine or linseed/flaxseed oil and one's color of choice (preferably sepia or burnt sienna). Next, give the canvas a wash with the turpentine/oil paint concoction. Then, a preliminary sketch with just oil paint. Afterwards, block the shadows and use a cloth to physically "wipe out" the highlights. There you go, wipeout painting in a nutshell.

Untitled, 2009
18" x 24" oil on canvas
Straight up, gangster oil painting. Word.

Edward Kim, 2009
Dimensions unknown, oil on canvas
This was probably my first attempt at portrait painting. I paint poorly and I cannot draw portraits. Needless to say, I had a hard time with this project. I did this painting for an '80s project for my Contemporary Painting class. I was flipping through my teacher's old high school yearbook when I noticed an entire row of Koreans. Upon further inspection, those Koreans all shared the last name Kim! Of course, I made it my mission to paint all of the Kims. Pictured above is Edward Kim. More Kims will come later.

The Line of Beauty (The "S" Curve), 2010
Dimensions unknown, charcoal on paper
Just a gesture drawing that I really like. Did this in Schoffman's class (that crazy a-hole, haha). I want to create more fluid lines like those in the drawing. I must practice, practice, practice!! I remember a teacher (Valley Mestroni, I believe) I had in my freshman year. She taught me the importance of line weight and line quality. She also introduced to me the Line of Beauty, otherwise known as the "S" curve. I didn't quite understand that concept then but now I see the beauty in the "S." Art really opens the door to so many little details!
That's all I'm going to dump today. I want to make Blogger's 1024MB last as long as I can.

the storm after the storm

Image courtesy of Albert K. Ryan © 2010
Screw it. Forget the rainbow after the storm. For me, it's one storm after another. I'm just drowning in a torrent of emotions right now. Like I said, there's a void that I need him to fill. It's too bad that I'm not like other girls; I can't just accept anyone to fill that hole. It has to be him. I guess that gap in my chest will remain empty until he falls in love with me too or until I move on in a few years.
I'm so... emotionally unstable that I don't even know what else to write.
Am I too selfish, too greedy, too optimistic? I want him to love me even though I don't match up to him at all in intellect, talent, discipline, ethics, morals, accomplishments, et cetera. He couldn't possibly want such a worthless womangirl. At merely seventeen, I'm not even a woman yet!! He's caring and I'm just downright cynical. He's compassionate whereas I am indifferent. I'm confused and he's focused. We're really of two different worlds!
I don't want to live through Valentine's Day alone. For the first time in a long time I'm afraid of being alone. I wonder what he's going to do on that day? Who will give him chocolates? Will a new love bloom for him? Will he forget me like he has forgotten me? I don't want to be forgotten by people I (have) love(d).
I can't be happy for very long. He's only given me so much fuel to run on. I miss him dreadfully. (Incidentally, "missing [someone] like crazy" isn't actually proper English. Use "miss" + a noun or a pronoun + an adjective instead.)
Hrm, seems like I've lost my steam. Well, I suppose I'll attempt to get started on my Pohlmann homework now...

下雨,流泪 [我的心情]

Image courtesy of Albert K. Ryan © 2010
Side note: I really love Albiebaby's photographs. Aren't they amazing?

It was kind of cool. (笑)
I liked the bands, singers, and the lectures.
The Cal Tech lectures were cool.
There were three Cal Tech graduates.
I wrote down a cool phrase from the second lecture: "70 minutes of sunlight can power the entire human population for a year." We really must harness the power of the sun!
The first speaker talked about sustainability and design. He recommended the book Cradle to Cradle to us. Cal Tech also has a product design course!

Cradle To Cradle
The second speaker presented us with the annual projected electricity use for 2030.

The last speaker talked about EVs (electric vehicles) and showed us how he converted an old Triumph Spitfire into a brand new EV. He also told us about some great websites:

The Triumph Spitfire: Before

The electric motor

The Triumph Spitfire: After
Image heavy, yes, but they were very interesting lectures!
MonoFAIL takedown photos and souvenir photos will be up later.
Life's Little Surprises

City Hall, Old Town, Pasadena
I had to take care of some legal mumbo jumbo.
As if that wasn't bad enough, I was reminded of my dying grandfather.
Naturally, I cried.
As I cried, a man walked by.
Instead of ignoring me, he looked at me and said, "Wow, you're gorgeous."
I didn't know how to respond so I got in my car and drove away.
Now that I think about it though, I wish I had thanked him properly.
Even though he uttered only three words to me, he comforted me.
He made me thankful that people like him still exist.
Then I realized that if there are people like him on Earth, then there must be people twice as nice in Heaven.
It's comforting to know that my grandfather will be with those caring people soon.
...Even so, I still don't want him to go!

Guilin, China
I love you, Grandpa. I probably didn't say it enough but I want you to know that I love you and I always will. I love you and I'm sorry I can't be by your side right now. I'll try not to cry if you promise me you'll fight to live. 爷爷,求求你,你一定要等我。你不要先走呵。。。

make art, not Art
My figure drawing teacher (David Schoffman) told the class once: "Why make 'Art' when you can make 'art'?" or something like that. Basically, he had a problem with critics and novices slapping the capital "A" on "art." Just like that, in his usual comical and high strung way, he taught us the difference between the two. "Art" was more commercial, and "art" was personal.
He's right. A few days ago I wrote in my Lang-8 journal that my art was purely hedonistic and that that worried me. However, now that I remembered Schoffman's words, I am comforted. What if I made art purely for myself? What if I made art for art but not Art for critics? I don't care. Ah, but therein I find the stereotype of the "starving artist." No matter. I've prepared myself for that route more or less.
*starving artist: an artist who sacrifices material well-being in order to focus on their artwork; one who is also extremely attached to one's pieces
I admit: I love my stuff. I am to my work as Vermeer is to The Allegory of Painting.
My stuff is my legacy. 'Nuff said. Word.
Actually, on second thought, I'm not a "starving artist." Rather, I am a hedonistic artist. That's a world of difference!

He's A Real Life Samurai
Oh God. My heart just sank into my stomach.
I know he's serious about his work and so are his lab mates and so is his teacher but there's no need to exaggerate by saying anyone who fails at their lab work shall commit suicide or "self-die" as he put it. 自殺???
It's kind of cute but it's also kind of scary.
He's so damn ambitious...
EVEN SO! AR AR AR AR AR JSAHDJSKLFHSJKFH.
If he had time to make two blogs in English why didn't he have time to at least say "hi" to me‽‽‽
